WHAT a cast, and what fun they have with "Sneakers." I got a clue about the movie when Universal sent a computer press kit instead ofthe usual folder full eft" printed material. It was entertaining by itself to go through and learn about the wacky characters who people the movie. A "sneaker" is a high-tech expert who penetrates computer systems' to test their security. Attempts to get the pair to talk about "Sneakers" were finally successful, even rousing Phoenix to talk. He was quiet most of the time, popping out of his dream state now and then to add something to what Aykroyd was saying. "I enjoyed the ensemble," Phoenix said. "It was inspiring. I felt like a scarab (beetle) next to a pyramid." "Everybody recognised Phoenix as a peer," Aykroyd said. "He was a total pro. He has his head on straight. It was an advantage to have him." "I was tickled pink to work with Dan," Phoenix said. Aykroyd's character was spiced up by director Phil Robinson. Aykroyd's brother is an expert on conspiracies, so they used him for ideas. "My brother Pete gave us information on UFOs, cattle mutilations, the Tri-Lat-eral Commission, the staged moon landing, JFK, Marilyn Monroe and we gave it to Phil," he explained, also stating that he is credited with coming up with a truly funny throwaway line about Pete Rose. Aykroyd waxed poetic about the alien landings, cattle mutilations and crop circles, finishing with "Hey, some aliens were looking for snacks and said, 'Let's go down to Earth and have a snack and move on? " Phoenix popped up again, after some discussion of Big Brother in the '60s and being a radical. "I'm probably a bigger patriot than George Bush. I live by the Constitution," he said. "The film reminds me of people with no allegiance to their country. The joke's on the masses; there's a new world order and that's a bad idea." The pair are going into business together, opening a blues club in Boston this fall. They've already gotten members of the rock band Aerosmith to invest and are hoping for a success like the Hard Rock Cafes. They seem an odd couple, but in a weird way, play off each other well.
